The EncounterPRO Foundation, Inc. is a domestic non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Georgia. The EncounterPRO Foundation exists to promote the use of open source EMR/EHR software, clinical groupware for pediatric and primary care offices, and the open source EncounterPRO-OS EMR Clinical Groupware Platform.
Clinical groupware is
“Intentional care team processes and procedures pertaining to the observation and treatment of patients plus the tools designed to support and facilitate the care team’s workflows.” (Adapted from Johnson-Lenz, P. & Johnson-Lenz, 1982, who are widely credited with coining “groupware”)
Process-aware clinical groupware relies on an executable process model, which makes it possible for clinical groupware to automatically present the right screen, data or order entry options, and presentation format at the right time and place in pediatric workflow to save pediatricians and other primary care physicians' time and concern. The workflow engine automatically does the right thing at the right time and place because it consults a process model, a set of process definitions that model pediatric and primary care workflow and processes for a particular medical office.
We view process-aware clinical groupware as a compelling paradigm that can achieve (1) well understood, (2) consistently executed, (3) adaptively resilient, and (4) systematically improvable ambulatory care team workflows. The free open source EncounterPRO-OS EMR clinical groupware platform and platform extensions:
- model clinical workflows with process definitions executable by workflow engines,
- coordinate care by managing task handoffs between care givers and care giver organizations,
- display real-time task status to physicians, staff, and care coordinators about care-in-progress to handle exceptions to routine care workflow, and (eventually)
- provide process analytic tools to optimize clinical effectiveness, efficiency, and patient and user satisfaction.
Process-aware clinical process described in this way is clearly analogous to business process management and case management software that has been used in industries outside of healthcare for several decades. An important part of The EncounterPRO Foundation's mission is accelerate the diffusion, transfer, and adoption of these technologies into healthcare, and especially into ambulatory care. Combining business process management and adaptive case management with traditional EMR / EHR functionality will result in dramatically more productive and usable clinical information systems.
The EncounterPRO Foundation also believes that free open source healthcare software is an evitable requirement to meet healthcare's requirements for innovative, high quality, reliable, and secure software at a reasonable total cost of ownership. Most people associate the phrase "open source" with programming code created by programmers and executed by users. However open source ideas affect more and more endeavors, from open educational content to open government data to open source science and design.
The EncounterPRO Foundation seeks to share and improve on at least four levels of a "stack." These levels correspond to
- open source code,
- open source content,
- open source concepts, and
- open source copy.
1. Open Source Code
The EncounterPRO-OS free open source clinical groupware platform is based on millions of computer language instructions can be inspected, improved, recompiled, and redistributed (subject to the GPL 3.0 Affero license).
2. Open Source Content
You may think of the EncounterPRO-OS platform as a means to interpret database content that represents symptoms, signs, clinical values, assessments, and treatments plus "workplans" (similar to process definitions or workflow definitions in the business process management industry). Currently, when you download and install EncounterPRO-OS you are actually downloading and installing a combination of open source code and open source content. This current content drives EncounterPRO-OS behavior to create a pediatric EMR workflow system: "Clinical Groupware for Pediatric Practice."
3. Open Source Concepts
Behind the design of the EncounterPRO-OS clinical platform is a set of ideas drawn from cognitive science and usability engineering(especially Fitts's and Hicks Laws, radar view), software engineering (software components, platforms), and business process management (executable process models, adaptive case management).
4. Open Source Copy
This sentence is an example of open source copy. You are free to use and adapt it (and the rest of words around it on this page and website) as long as you attribute the source. The words and images on this EncounterPRO Foundation EncounterPRO.org website are licensed under the creative commons attribution 3.0 license.
